Automatic Splicing with the ACL: Securing Continuous Yarn Flow and Machine Uptime

While moving heavy bobbins presents physical challenges, the true technical hurdle often lies in yarn tail preparation and splicing. Manual splicing inherently introduces variability. Inconsistent knot profiles, loose tails, and improper tension lead to avoidable line stops downstream, directly impacting overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). To solve this challenge, the Automatic Creel Loader (ACL) developed by Vandewiele Automation integrates a fully automated, high-precision splicing process directly into the creel loading sequence.

How Splicing Fits Into the Automated ACL Sequence

Automated splicing does not happen in isolation. It relies on a seamlessly synchronized, end-to end workflow where every bobbin is prepared to exact specifications before yarn joining takes place:

  • Bobbin Unloading : An industrial robotic arm automatically unloads incoming bobbins from pallets, trolleys, or overhead conveyors and places them into the production line.
  • Vision Control : Integrated vision identifies each bobbin, verifying dimensions and detecting surface defects to ensure only fully compliant packages proceed.
  • Cleaning : Loose yarn ends are automatically identified, unraveled, cleaned, and accurately positioned to guarantee reliable downstream handling.
  • Carousel Buffer : Prepared bobbins are temporarily stored and sequenced on an intelligent carousel buffer to optimize machine cadence and flow.
  • Creel Loading : A multi-axis robotic system accurately loads and places bobbins onto their designated creel positions, ensuring balanced weight distribution for smooth yarn consumption.
  • Automated Splicing : The yarn tail is joined automatically to ensure unbroken production continuity.

Synergistic Innovation: Developed with MESDAN

At the core of the ACL’s splicing station is expert technology developed in close collaboration with MESDAN, a fellow Vandewiele Group company.

By leveraging MESDAN’s world-renowned expertise in textile joining solutions, the ACL achieves repeatable, high-strength yarn splices tailored to various synthetic yarn types (PP, PA, PES BCF). This synergy within the Vandewiele ecosystem ensures that every splice withstands high-speed downstream process tensions without compromising yarn quality.

Why Automated Splicing Changes the Game for Manufacturers

Replacing manual knots with automated splicing delivers tangible operational benefits across 24/7 production environments:

  • Reduced Downtime : Repeatable, smooth yarn joints pass effortlessly through downstream equipment, eliminating micro-stops and costly yarn breaks.
  • Consistent & Standardization Quality : Eliminates human variability, ensuring every single joint meets identical mechanical criteria.
  • Minimized Material Waste : Precise tail positioning and automated cutting significantly reduce yarn waste compared to manual handling.
  • 24/7 Autonomy : Operators are freed from tedious, repetitive manual splicing, allowing facility staff to focus on supervisory and higher-value operations

Moving Towards Autonomous Creel Operations

True automation goes beyond mechanical handling it is about securing continuous process flow. By combining robotics, vision inspection, and MESDAN automatic splicing, the ACL transforms creel loading into a predictable, highly efficient, and fully autonomous operation.
